PRACTICING TIPS:
Setting up a practice routine:
*Discuss practicing with your parents. Work with them to choose a good time and place to practice.
*Practicing 5-10 minutes 5 days a week is a good start and will help you become a proficient player.
*As you begin to play more challenging songs, your daily practice time may need to increase.
*If you forgot your recorder at school... be creative! Turn something like a pencil into a recorder & practice your fingerings.
Remember:
* It's okay to Fail EARLY, Fail OFTEN, Fail FORWARD to be successful!

* Some students will need more time than others to learn a new song, and that's o.k!
* Begin SLOWLY. Don't worry about increasing the speed of a song until you're ready.
* When first learning a song, read all of the information concerning new notes and other concepts.
* If you get frustrated, put your recorder away for a few minutes. Try just singing and clapping the rhythm....or get help from someone!
* It's o.k. to take a break and try again in a few minutes.
* Writing note names above the notes is allowed (accept for testing on Ode To Joy)
During practice "Controlled Failure":
* If you make a mistake, practice that measure by itself a few times before trying it with the entire piece again. Try it SLOWLY and then add in more speed to a comfortable tempo.
* Feel free to create your own melody using the notes you've learned so far.
* For an added challenge, memorize or write down your melody and share it during your next music class.
* Perform a piece that you love to play for your family!
When practicing your recorder... remember these 5 things:
1. Left hand on top
2. Support with the right hand on the bottom half
3. Use your "Finger prints" to cover the holes completely
4. Use gentle, soft air (make a tu sound)
5. Listen for a beautiful and clear tone
If you squeak, try these...
1. Use less air/play softer.
2. Check the thumb hole on the back
3. Flatten your fingers and squeeze to cover the holes better
4. Double check the recorder is put together tightly
5. A CLEAN recorder will make the difference too!

Be sure to download "Staff Wars V1.2" (NOT Staff Wars V2.1) to play the version we have been using in class on the Smartboard. V2.1 is also fun, but you will need your computer's microphone to play. You actually have to play the correct notes on your instrument to "zap" the moving notes in this version.
- ATTENTION STUDENTS: Please ask your parents for permission and help before downloading this program. There are other free music games on the website that you might be interested in downloading as well.
